Reflection #3 Myers-Briggs Personality Type Indicator (MBTI)

Myers-Briggs Personality Type Indicator (MBTI)

The Myers-Briggs Personality Type Indicator is a self-report inventory designed to identify a person's personality type, strengths, and preferences. The questionnaire was developed by Isabel Myers and her mother Katherine Briggs based on their work with Carl Jung's theory of personality types. Today, the MBTI inventory is one of the world's most widely used psychological instruments. The sixteen personality types were created by Isabel Myers and Katharine Briggs, Myers and Briggs created their personality typology to help people discover their own strengths and gain a better understanding of how people are different.

There are four Myers-Briggs preference pairs, first is the Extraversion and Introversion, Extraversion gets energy from the outer world of people and experiences. Focuses energy and attention outwards in action while Introversion Gets energy from the inner world of reflections and thoughts. Focuses energy and attention inwards in reflection. Second is the Sensing and Intuition, Sensing prefers real information coming from the five senses. Focuses on what is real. While intuition Prefers information coming from associations. Focuses on possibilities and what might be. Third is the Thinking and Feeling, thinking Steps out of situations to analyze them dispassionately. Prefers to make decisions based on objective logic. While feeling Steps into situations to weigh human values and motives. Prefers to make decisions based on values. And last is the Judging and Perceiving, judging Prefers to live life in a planned and organized manner. Enjoys coming to closure and deciding. While perceiving Prefers to live life in a spontaneous and adaptable way. Enjoys keeping options open.

The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator was created to help people better understand themselves and those around them. It allows people to appreciate and respect differences for better communications, relationships, teamwork, and a better life. It’s popular because it does what it was designed to do help people live better, more self-aware lives. In an educational setting, the MBTI may be performed to assess student learning style. In a classroom setting, the MBTI may be used to help teens and young adults better understand their learning, communication, and social interaction styles. Guidance counselors also might use the test to help teens determine which occupational field or college major they might be best suited for. Because the MBTI is also a tool for self-discovery, mental health professionals may administer the test in counseling sessions to provide their patients with insight into their behavior. Among adults, the MBTI is also used in organizational settings to assess management skills and facilitate teamwork and problem solving.
