Reflection #1 Howard Gardner's Theory in Multiple Intelligences
Howard Gardner's Theory in Multiple Intelligences
Howard Gardner, who is a professor, released a document that outline his theory of multiple intelligences where he strongly believed that everyone has different intelligences. His theory of multiple intelligences challenges the idea of a single IQ, where human beings have one central computer where intelligence cannot be changed and can only be measured by a psychologist. At first, Howard Gardner listed only seven intelligences which is verbal, mathematical, musical, bodily kinesthetic, spatial, interpersonal, and intrapersonal. However, he later added the eight and nine skills which is naturalist intelligence and existential intelligence. Howard Gardner stated that people are more attuned to certain intelligence than others. This is because we can exceed at any intelligence we choose after a long process of learning.
There are nine multiple intelligences, first is the Verbal-Linguistic intelligence, verbal-linguistic uses language to express and understand ideas they can be writer, journalist, speaker, and lawyer. Second is the Logical-mathematical intelligence, logical-mathematical strength in reasoning and logical thinking they recognize the patterns in daily life they can be accountant, engineer, computer programmer, mathematician, and scientist. Third is the Spatial-Visual intelligence, visual-spatial is the ability to represent the spatial world in one’s mind often call artistic or creative they can be artist, architect, interior designer, engineer, photographer, and inventor. Fourth is the Bodily-Kinesthetic intelligence, bodily-kinesthetic enjoys the movement of body to solve a problem, creating something, or perform often called active they can be athlete, dancer, actor, and physical therapist. Fifth is the Musical intelligence, they are strong sense of rhythm able to hear patterns in sound they can be musician, songwriter, composer, sound technician, and music teacher. Sixth is the Interpersonal intelligence, interpersonal is the ability to understand other people works well on terms and in groups they can be teacher, nurse, clinician, salesperson, therapist, and politician. Seventh is the Intrapersonal intelligence, intrapersonal has a deep understanding of oneself often said that you “know who you are” they can be entrepreneur or businessperson, writer, therapist, and social worker. Eight is the Naturalist intelligence, naturalist is the ability to recognize and categorized plants, animals, and other objects in nature they can be environmental, scientist, botanist, farmer, meteorologist, veterinarian, sailor, park ranger, and biologist. And last is the Existential intelligence, existential has deep desire to ponder the questions about life, death, and ultimate realities.
Gardner points out that everyone has strengths and weaknesses, every people have its own intelligence so as a future educator we need to be observant in our students and understand that all children think and learn differently. It also helps the student to enhance student’s learning achievement, promote the motivation to learn, enhance ability of cooperative learning with peer and develop their skills and knowledge.
